The correct application steps of silicone grease

      There are many names for silicone grease, such as heat dissipating silicon, thermal conductive silicon, etc. Its full name is "thermal conductive silicone grease", which is a component with multiple effects of lubricant, heat conduction, and heat dissipation. Its true function is to increase better adhesion between the CPU and the heat sink.

The correct application method:

     First, determine the size of the contact surface between the heat sink base and the CPU, and apply silicone grease in a small amount.
Using finger covers, if you don‘t have one, you can choose a plastic bag. Remember not to apply it directly by hand, and then apply silicone grease in one direction to the area in contact with the CPU. This is to ensure that silicone grease can fill areas with uneven heat dissipation.

Use a flat cloth, preferably a clean lens cloth or glasses cloth, to gently wipe off the silicone grease at the bottom of the radiator. Some players may think that silicone grease is for better thermal conductivity, but that‘s not the case. The heat dissipation ability of silicone grease is not as good as that of metal. The purpose of using silicone grease is to ensure the front contact between the heat sink base and the CPU surface, which are two rigid substances that are difficult to ensure. And relying on silicone grease for supplementation in inaccessible areas is not because silicone grease has a stronger heat dissipation ability than radiators.

If the silicone grease is applied too thick, it means that the heat from the CPU is mainly transferred to the heat sink through the silicone grease, and this heat dissipation effect will be significantly reduced. After wiping it off with a cloth, a thin layer of silicone grease contact area is left, which is the most perfect. Actually, many people know that silicone grease cannot be too thick. Generally, the amount of silicone grease applied is used to control its thickness. Few people would think of using a cloth to wipe off excess silicone grease. This method is still very effective.

     After applying silicone grease to the CPU, place the heat sink on top and squeeze it, which may result in uneven application or overflow due to squeezing.

The best tool for applying on the surface of the CPU is to use plastic sheets. Some silicone greases come with a scraper. For those without a scraper, you can choose transparent packaging or other transparent sheets in the product. You can cut them by hand, and the width should be slightly wider than the CPU surface.

Afterwards, start from one corner of the CPU and apply silicone grease evenly in one direction, covering the entire surface of the CPU. The thinner the silicone grease is applied, the flatter the contact area will be. If the bottom of the radiator adopts a mirror design, the silicone grease can be applied very thinly, and the thinness can present a semi transparent effect.

    Finally, install the heat sink. As long as it is pressed down, do not rotate or move the heat sink, otherwise it may cause uneven silicone grease between the coated heat sink and the CPU, and there may also be air bubbles affecting heat dissipation.

When applying silicone grease, it is important to remember not to be too greedy, as excessive amounts can affect the heat dissipation and affect the fit between the CPU and the heat sink. Silver containing silicone grease may not be effective, as some silicone greases contain larger metal particles, which may not be very effective in use.
